OBSERVATION or How to read a reference video?

18-ObservationHi everybody (Translation in progress),

Surely you will have heard that the key to being a good animator living in these 3 words: Observation, observation and observation.

It seems quite easy but when you start in the world of animation one wonders: “Vale, I'll watch my video reference…but do I have to set me?”

The answer is quite simple : ENDS! These will give you all the information you acting and biomechanics that your needed…from the moment that you know to locate and analyze.

In general, classify the ends thus:
Ends in time : The poses that tend to stay often become your goldens poses.
Ends in a movement : These ends will define your breakdowns.
Ends before a movement : These will become your anticipations.
Ends after a stroke : These in your reactions.
extreme short : The details and actions Excentrics.

HOW TO ANALYZE A VIDEO REFERENCE?
Now that you know to corresponding each end, I leave here a checklist to analyze and draw all the necessary information for your blocking:
Forces : The first thing you have to do is understand that setting the character stands and what the forces around him are? (See FORCES)
Path of Action : Then, fijaros in the paths of the important parts of the body (In general the pelvis to a plane of body dynamics and nose to a plane of acting)
Extremes : By analyzing the path of action, You'll notice more extreme points. With what I have explained above, you only need to guess that it comes pose (Key Poses, anticipation, reaction or exentric)
Timing : Those same ends give you all the information necessary for your plane timing.
Line of Action : In each extreme pose , fijaros in the line of action of the character.
Arcs : Behold I bow draws every part of the body and when that arc is located.
Fulcrums : Look what are the points of support of your character.
Balance and Weight : Notice how the weight and balance in terms of those footholds distributed.
Biodynamics and physicality : Analyze how you react depending on the torso and pelvis How does it work the body to maintain balance and move in the environment.
Drag and Follow : Pay attention to the inertia and Analyze whence the energies to understand that part is leading and which is following
Details : To finish, Notice the small ends that will give the final details of your plans (flicker, tembleques, etc…)

Make use of the image plane Maya tool to import your reference and have it in one of your viewers when working.

NOTE
I recommend the program Kinovea to draw paths and make body dynamics analysis.

I hope that was usefull…
Keep animating!!!
